30 B4 30???

After last year's birthday I realized the doom was unavoidable. Turning 29 meant there was no going back - every day from that day on was a count down. 30 was less than a year away.

I immediately began to Google "30 things to do before your 30" lists. Some were good - get a signature drink, drive cross-country, take a trip alone with your girlfriends, watch a sunrise on the beach...I've even done most of these! But there was also my "adult" list. The things I think that should have accomplished, done or the place in my life I think I should be by the time I'm 30. So many things are not accomplished on that list:(

Well, I began whining to friends (as I do) when one pointed out something rather astounding: "Think about the second you were born. When that second passes you'll be 30. What's the difference in a second?" So simple, yet so comforting. All of a sudden my arbitrary "30 b4 30" list seemed rather, well... like someone in her 20's wrote it!

So that night I log on to read the updates by my favorite bloggers when one of my new addictions posts a similar tale. Destined for Royalty wrote about her impending birthday and her steady move into her official "late" 20's (as I call it) and all the things she'd accomplished in this decade. She wasn't focusing on what she hadn't been able to do, but what she'd actually done. Thus, I present to you on this day (exactly 1 month before my 30th bday) a list of things I survived in my 20's. For better or for worse;=)

  • Got an apartment and lived with a roommate
  • Graduated with a bachelor's (on time and with honors)
  • Moved to a new state
  • Began a career (8 years in the same district!)
  • Lived on my own
  • Found a church of my own (not one I inherited from my parents)
  • Lived alone
  • Learned to trust God and listen to Him
  • Got a dog
  • Survived a car crash
  • Left the country
  • Frequented Vegas
  • Saw a Broadway musical production (okay, I saw like 10!)
  • Saw a Broadway musical production in NYC!
  • Took 2 major vacations and one weekend with girlfriends
  • Found my signature drink (Grey Goose and club soda w/ a large lime wedge)
  • Became an aunt
  • See Cher live
  • Rocked a baby to sleep
  • Began serving at my church
  • Got a furson
  • Be on TV (okay, I kinda over-killed this one, too)
  • Learned to ski
  • Learned to golf
  • Flew alone
  • Changed a baby's diaper! (who'd of thunk it??)
  • Hiked in the mountains
  • Bought a house
  • Wore a crown in public and it was totally socially acceptable (spent a year doing this one! haha)
  • Tithe on a regular schedule
  • Started grad school (ok, so I did this twice, but I'm seeing this one through!)
  • Married the man that is not only the love of my life, but the man God intended for me to have

Okay, obviously there has been more than these things, but they are fun, they are milestones and they are memories. I have lots more I want to do (Run a 5k, start a family, go on a mission trip, take a photography class...), but fortunately these things do not have an expiration date. And I will do more than one of them this year.

So that about sums it up. I will soak in every last second of being a 20-something, and look forward to the next decade of my life at the decade where I not only tried new things, but I also had a more positive, relaxed out look on life. For after all, the difference in a decade is only a second.
