What Do Fish Have To Do With Anything?

My class is reading a story out of our Literature book this week where a young boy talks to a homeless man about the cure for unhappiness. In the story, he shares a piece of cake with the man, which he has measured using the thickness of his thumb. The homeless man asks him why he’s measuring a piece that size. The boy answers that the box indicates that size as a serving. The man tells him to determine a serving size for him; the boy must look at him and cut as much as he thinks the man needs. The boy does, and the man is happy with the size of his piece of cake.

While the man is eating his cake, he tells the boy he knows the secret to happiness. It’s that people need more than they say.

How powerful is that? How often do we not fully express our needs for fear of judgment, rejection or pride? How often do we want people to look at us and know what we need without us telling them? What a great reminder that we need to go beyond the basics to nurture relationships in our lives. We need to give people more than they say they need.
